But the interesting frontier now is the layer above the dashboard: systems that don't just display the situation, they help you decide and act inside it. I've watched this reframe land hardest in places where the stakes are concrete. In one consulting engagement, the breakthrough wasn't a better report — it was repositioning the whole effort from a labor-saving tool to forecast infrastructure, anchored on the millions of dollars of risk exposure that bad forecasting actually created. Nobody gets out of bed for a dashboard. People move fast when the system is making a consequential decision more reliable and showing them why they can trust it.

So I've stopped asking whether a product gives users good visibility. Visibility is table stakes. The question I care about is whether it reduces the distance between seeing and deciding — and whether it earns the right to do so by being transparent about how it got there. Dashboards inform. Decision systems commit, and explain themselves. The second one is where the value is going.
